Catherine came to us with a little sewing experience under her belt already, four yards of polypropylene scuba knit, and Vogue #1239: a Ralph Rucci wrap dress pattern. Let’s dive in:
Catherine wanted this to sit somewhere in-between a coat and a dress, so we got to work. The shape is simple enough; the most complicated parts being the collar and tulip-shaped cuffs.
She worked it up in muslin first. Then, after fitting, started in on the scuba.
A note about working with scuba fabric: It isn’t friendly and forgiving if you have to rip out seams. Make sure that your seams are set and true right off the bat – especially where you are easing things together. In this case, we had the most trouble with the cuffs, as the inset curves are so tight. But we made it through and when she was done she found the perfect background:
We forwent the belt and she used a retail belt, but the garment itself looks great!
